Spatial structure and talents, interim uses and temporary designs with a building site?

The Haus der Architektur (hdak) reports on the status quo and explains the location and the special qualities of the cultural quarter in the spatial structure of the core zone of the city center, regardless of the location of the cube. Even during the conversion of the library and despite large-scale construction site facilities, the quarter with its cultural facilities and the Haubrich-Hof continues to offer special urban spaces in a prominent city center neighborhood and with path networks in an east-west direction and to the south. Can cultural uses, new actors and events and other, new formats of cultural performance be conceived in the interim period, without a library, or could these be created here temporarily, including in the outdoor space?

The NEUVERORTUNG project was launched in 2020 in the context of the planned general refurbishment of the Central Library. Since then, experts have been discussing the question of how public space can be used to create new social and cultural relationships. This is because the urban experience in the 21st century is becoming increasingly complex and autonomous. Public space is gaining in importance, smart cities are changing traditional spatial arrangements and the question of how urban planning and organization can meet global climate goals is at the forefront of all changes.

Together with the Haus der Architektur Köln, we will once again address complex questions for contemporary and sustainable architectural concepts in public space in fall 2023.
