She has lost her husband, the gypsum quarry is closing, her entire mining town is being wound up: 60-year-old Fern packs her belongings into a van and sets off, along with other nomads drifting across the United States, from job to job, from parking lot to parking lot, outside but not beneath conventional US society.
Together with Frances McDormand, who also produced the film, Chloé Zhao has created a powerful portrait of a social milieu in self-imposed mobility: based on a non-fiction book, her film mixes fictional and documentary elements to tell the story of a community that is trying to determine its own life even after economic decline. The film won the Golden Lion in Venice and three Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress (McDormand's third Oscar after FARGO and THREE BILLOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI).
