Masterpieces of choral music from the Renaissance to the late Romantic period will be performed under the title O Magnum Mysterium.
The title is taken from Palestrina's motet O magnum mysterium, whose clear, floating polyphony and gently merging melodies create a solemn, meditative atmosphere. The text praises the "great mystery" of the birth of Christ.
Laudes Organi by Zoltán Kodály is a tribute to the organ. Kodály's work, premiered in 1966, is a homage to the organ and to music itself. The Hungarian composer draws on a Latin poem from the 12th century. With rhythmic energy, colorful harmonies and contrasting choral movements, Laudes Organi combines old sound traditions with modern tonal language.
This festive setting of Psalm 122 by Hubert Parry, I was glad, was first heard in 1902 at the coronation of King Edward VII and has since become a permanent fixture at British state ceremonies.
