The Luo people live mainly in Kenya on the shores of Lake Victoria. Their cultural heritage is extremely rich and influential, although the tribe is underrepresented or even neglected on a political and social level. To name just one example: With the rousing guitar sounds of Benga music, the Luo sparked a veritable dance craze on East African dance floors in the 1970s. About 10 years ago, Planet Rock had the pleasure of working with one of the leading Luo artists and her female choir: Ogoya Nengo, born Anastasia Oluoch presumably in 1941, is the queen of dodo singing, a form of singing practiced predominantly by women, used in part to spread the latest news among villagers and act as social commentary. We were impressed by Ogoya, her towering personality and sheer authority as a performer. In 2026, they are thrilled to finally have the opportunity to bring this great East African diva back to Europe together with ODD OKODDO. The duo consists of drummer and percussionist Sven Kacirek, a musician who moved from Hamburg to Nairobi and co-produced both LPs of the Dodo Women's Group, and Anastasia's longtime friend, singer and lute player extraordinaire Olith Ratego. Together, the trio presents the new album "Palagoma", which will be released in April 2026 on Sven's brand new label "From Cool Waters". But ODD OKODDO + Ogoya Nengo only unfold their true magic on stage, as they proved during a short stint in August 2025, including a breathtaking show at Berlin's Humboldt Forum: ancient roots sounds combined with modern production techniques, music that invites you to dance, think and sing along, carried by the presence of two unstoppable singers.
