The Bundesjugendorchester is Germany's youngest top orchestra for up-and-coming musicians aged 14 to 19. In late summer, it goes on tour with two artists who - both born in 2000 - are among the most promising new talents as winners of internationally renowned competitions: Aurel Dawidiuk and Giorgi Gigashvili. The program includes works that combine past and present. Giya Kancheli's "Another Step" is both modern and archaic with its wide sound surfaces and extremely subtle dynamics. Rachmaninov's Third Piano Concerto, one of the most difficult in the concerto literature, is notoriously virtuosic and emotionally powerful. Perfectly suited to Gigashvili, who combines astonishing precision with creative expressiveness. Around 50 years later, Maurice Ravel staged Modest Mussorgsky's piano cycle "Pictures at an Exhibition" from 1874 for large orchestra so brilliantly and effectively with a feel for the richness of color and rhythmic power of the original that it has become an integral part of concert halls today.
