PANEL RESTITUTION IN FILM

An often overlooked and ignored topic: there are countless films that are kept in European and American film archives, museums and universities. These are not only films that were produced for propaganda purposes during the colonial era, but also films by African filmmakers from more recent times. Why do many African filmmakers not own the rights to their films? How many African films are actually in Western archives? Why are these films and reels neglected on the continent? What can and should we do as filmmakers?

Why do many African filmmakers don't hold the right to their films? How many African films are actually in Western Archives? Why don't we know the exact numbers? Why are films, film reels neglected on the continent? What can and should we do as film practitioners?
