Robert Schumann once called his friend Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy the "Mozart of the century". Schumann especially admired the latter's 2nd Piano Concerto as "ripe, sweet fruit". Alexander Melnikov now plays this enticingly sound-scented piano concerto.
The Mahler Chamber Orchestra also presents two extremely rhythmic orchestral works with its Russian guest conductor Maxim Emelyanychev. Mozart's opera "Idomeneo" features numerous dance numbers that have been combined into a ballet score in their own right. And Beethoven's 7th Symphony, which was exuberantly celebrated at its premiere in 1813, was once described by Richard Wagner as an "apotheosis of dance" because of its impulsiveness.
