POST-COLONIAL CITY TOUR - SÜDSTADT
Meeting point: Bürgerzentrum Stollwerck, Dreikönigenstraße 23
With Merle Bode and Linda Jalloh
Duration: approx. 1.5-2 hours; Participants: max. 25
In our guided tour through Südstadt, we show that German colonialism took place on our doorstep and had a lasting impact on the neighborhood: We introduce actors from the colonized societies, tell of anti-colonial resistance and white citizens who anchored the colonial idea. Colonial thinking affected all areas of social coexistence, such as everyday life, culture, the economy and science. We take a feminist look at gender relations at the time and take a critical look at racist continuities from the 19th century to the present day. And ask: "What does colonialism actually have to do with us?"
In our guided tour of Cologne's Südstadt, we show how German colonialism happened on our doorstep and has had a lasting effect on the neighborhood. We introduce key players from colonized societies, recount stories of anti-colonial resistance and of white citizens perpetuating the ideas of colonialism. Colonial thinking influenced all aspects of communal life, such as everyday routines, culture, science or the economy. We apply a feminist perspective to gender relationships prevalent at the time and critically reflect on continuous racism from the 19th century to the present day. And we pose the question "What does colonialism actually have to do with us?"
