Reparative Praktiken des Erinnern - Zugang und Rückgabe: Restitution im Film n°3

In his short film "Mbarodi", director Mamadou Khouma Gueye deals with the Senegalese tradition of the "Simb" (lion dance). While the public dances show strength, there are also moments of stillness, concentration, but also restlessness and exhaustion that bring us closer to the protagonists: while carefully applying make-up, in the museum, in the hustle and bustle at night and in a dialog with a caring friend. It shows how attention and care can restore the relationship to cultural assets.

The film "Cracks in the Mask" by Australian director Frances Calvert follows a couple from the Torres Strait Islands who search for objects of their culture in European museums in the 1990s. She combines museum scenes and conversations with historical footage and diary entries. Although some arguments for keeping the objects in Europe are still relevant, the film aims to inspire courage to heal the ruptures and re-establish broken connections despite all resistance.
