What do animals feel? And if they are as intelligent as pigs, can they get bored if they are kept industrially? Swiss author and reporter Urs Mannhart visits a research project in Austria that is investigating whether pigs can feel boredom - just like humans do. Many consumers want more animal welfare in conventional pig farming. What this does to the animals' psyche is rarely discussed and still far too little researched.

Urs Mannhart is not only an author, but also a trained farmer. He works on a small farm in western Switzerland - where he also has to deal with pigs. In his work, he has met funny, sociable, relationship-cultivating animals, but also those that seemed withdrawn, sad, even grieving. Urs Mannhart reads from his reportage and discusses with reportage editor Dmitrij Gawrisch what "emotionally appropriate" animal husbandry could mean in the case of highly intelligent pigs.
