Retratos Fantasmas is Kleber Mendonça Filhos' cinematic love letter to his hometown of Recife and the cinema. It addresses not only cinema as an art form, but also as a place: the movie theaters with their projectionists, who made the magic on the screen possible in the first place. All that remains of the movie palaces where screen gods were once worshipped and where he spent many hours are memories. The cinemas have long since become temples of consumption or evangelical megachurches.

Retratos Fantasmas is a nostalgic retrospective that combines personal stories with reflections on global phenomena such as gentrification, economic decline and the cinema crisis.
