Street music: the sound of the city
Concert, talk, DJ set
Street music has been part of Berlin's cultural identity for decades and shapes the public space in a special way. Whether in the subway, in busy places like Warschauer Brücke or in public squares - street musicians shape the sound of the city and provide spontaneous musical encounters in everyday life. For many artists, the street is much more than just a place to perform: it is a rehearsal stage, source of income, social space and sometimes the starting point of a career. This is where the first visibility for their own music is created, where there are immediate reactions to it and communities are formed.
The third evening of the Sound Base Berlin series makes this important, often informal part of Berlin's music culture visible. Through the perspective of street musicians, it is dedicated to the cultural, social and economic realities of their practice - and the people who shape the city with their sound. With Ronis Goliath, the focus is on an artist whose musical development is a special example of the stories of Berlin's street music scene. Between public space, live performance and a growing community, his music is at the very interface to which this evening is dedicated.
Talk with Ronis Goliath and Mark Nowakowski
Moderated by Diona Bathily, in English
The musicologist Mark Nowakowski has written his dissertation on music in public space. He discusses the topics of his research - musical identities, performance culture, reception and the art of survival - with Ronis Goliath, a protagonist of the Berlin street music scene. The discussion will be moderated by Diona Bathily, whose work, including for FluxFM, deals with the intersections of politics, society and pop culture.
Concert: Ronis Goliath
Ronis Goliath literally picked up the stories that Berlin tells from the street. The Cameroon-born musician performed in the city for years, for example at Warschauer Brücke, and gradually built up a loyal, constantly growing fan base. His song 'Tell Me One Lie' (2021) was the latest to reach an even larger audience online. In the video, he also paid homage to his beginnings as a street musician: he lay down on the asphalt in Berlin and sang into the night sky. Since then, Ronis Goliath has regularly filled larger concert halls with his combination of pop, R'n'B, lots of emotion and charm on stage.
