ROOKIEFEST 27 : FRAU DOKTOR + NINAMARIE

WOMAN DOCTOR

What to do? After 15 years of band history, 5 studio albums, a live album of lots of own songs, uncounted concerts and even more parties for the usual reasons for a "hobby band" in 2010 with a last release a serious end was drawn under "one of the most famous ska groups in Germany" (Wikipedia).
Then they let themselves be persuaded here and there to the one or other "last" gig. At some point they realized that it's more fun now than it was back then, and that the audience seems to feel the same way. And that the bone, to see the band mates only occasionally (and the many people who have become dear on the way and met again and again over the years practically not at all) is harder than thought.
And now? Again and again a "very last" concert to ease the phantom pain? What are people supposed to think...? And then you realize that you are already in the middle of it again and it doesn't feel like goodbye anymore but like a new start. So let's go and see that the Old Lady gets over the 25 year mark with dignity.

NINAMARIE

Thomas (Beatsteaks) and Marten (Turbostaat) have been making music together since 2005, their project is called Ninamarie. "Feuer in der Nachbarschaft" was released in 2013 and has not been available for about six years. The 12″ is now being reissued in a small edition as a 180gr. LP with poster insert re-pressed. "The Wedding Gift" and "Corpses to Cocktails" are among the slightly older treasures - "A great evening!" recalls Marten and Yes!, Survival can sound so good and haunting that you want to hang on. Right after that we land into "Süßafrika", an instrumental excursion and at one point a rather somber number. But then Thomas' flute teacher Mila Morgenstern came in good-humoredly with his flute into the game and doom became ethnic rock in a flash. Mila, beyond any musical doubt, may forgive us: flute on a punk rock label cost us some effort. But Ninamarie's sovereign "A must" allowed no hesitation. Finally, let's strip almost pixieesque earth rock with synthesizer, because "Der Ortsoberste" drives us downright before him, faster and faster, until we still quickly catch our breath in "33 Runden". Thanks to Masha Qrella, as charming as she accompanies the young man with her vocals through all the rounds. We feel reminded of Velvet Underground in the best way. By the way, Marten and Thomas played the drums four-handed without a foot machine.

And at the end we are left breathless. Simply breathlessness. "Der Fucking Kommandeur" tightens our throats; Marten himself calls it "a shaky piece of music, quasi a sea shanty." But it is precisely this straightforward sincerity in being irreconcilable with those who appeal to earlier consensus where there has always been only dissent that makes this piece so oppressive and anything but shaky. There Ninamarie give themselves five minutes in the middle of the song, which quite stoically and laconically radiate the coldness in which inhuman people leave us. - Finale courageous. Minor-major leap. Tusch. End.
