Philosophical Café: with Manuel Schäfler, Kilian Karger and Richard Rupp
Happiness has been a central theme of philosophy since Socrates, but the question of a happy life also plays an existential role in the life of every human being. Even the American constitution enshrines the pursuit of happiness as an inalienable right. In our meritocracy, which is characterized not least by social media, it almost seems to be a duty to lead as happy a life as possible. The concept of happiness encompasses various dimensions that need to be explored as part of a philosophical analysis of the term. In everyday language, we understand happiness as something like a favorable coincidence. But are we only happy when we are lucky? Is a happy life a clever calculation of experiences of pleasure and suffering, as the Epicureans assumed? Happiness is used as a marker for a successful life, but doesn't such a life have to include more than a multitude of intense experiences of happiness?
