In 1828, the year of his death, Franz Schubert created an absolute masterpiece of Classical-Romantic chamber music: the exuberant richness of sound, the rapturous tone, and the deeply tender yet painfully existential moments of his string quintet are unparalleled. Like Schubert, Alexander Glazunov —a former student of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov—chose to expand the quartet lineup with a second cello for his quintet, yet in doing so discovered entirely different sonic worlds: ranging from the elegance of the salons to folk melodies.
