In Memoriam Sixto Rodríguez:
SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN
Director: Malik Bendjelloul
GB/Sweden 2012, 86 min., OV English with German UT, Blu-ray projection
With: Sixto Díaz Rodríguez, Stephen Segerman, Dennis Coffey
Documentary about American '70s folk singer Sixto Rodriguez, who was presumed lost or even dead until about 15 years ago.
Two South Africans, who were already fans of the singer when his first album was released, set out on a journey to find out what became of their idol. In South Africa, over time, the singer became a music legend similar to John Lennon, except that Rodríguez knew nothing of his success, just as his fellow Americans did. The story is unbelievable for all involved: In times of digital media and an incredible treasure of knowledge and knowledge dissemination, a star lives impoverished in one country - without even knowing about his fame in another part of the world. Director Malik Bendjelloul follows the two fans and shows their encounters with the Rodríguez family.
