Squid have come a long way. In 2016 they were still playing once a month as an instrumental jazz band in
instrumental jazz band in Brighton while living in cheap rented accommodation on the Sussex coast after graduating. The band began to express influences from Outsider Punk to Fourth World, and became known for their chaotic and increasingly incendiary live shows. They moved to London to make the most of their burgeoning reputation, and after producer Dan Carey heard them at South London talent incubator The
Windmill", he invited them into his studio. They released a series of good singles
on Speedy Wunderground and the "Town Centre" EP (2019). An album deal with the visionary Warp label followed, and the hype around Squid continued to grow. Their debut album "Bright Green Field" (2021) was released at a time when the world was starting to open up again after the pandemic, landing them in the top 5 of the UK charts. In 2023, they released their second album "O Monolith", which took the band all over the world and allowed them to break new ground that seemed almost impossible five years earlier. Like the most daring second albums, "O Monolith" pointed the way beyond their groundbreaking sound and led the band towards an experimental career. Fans grew with them, spreading alternative versions of songs and demos in setlists and NTS sessions.
"Cowards" is Squid's boldest album to date: by expanding the scope and simultaneously going back to basics, Squid have created something new and strangely supernatural. Squid are Louis Borlase, Arthur Leadbetter, Laurie Nankivell, Anton Pearson and Ollie Judge.
