Stegreif freeEROICA | Kronberg Festival 2026 „Courage!“
In the organizer's words:
Beethoven’s Third Symphony was itself an act of artistic courage. Originally dedicated to Napoleon, Beethoven changed his stance when Napoleon crowned himself emperor. His admiration for the revolutionary gave way to distance from the ruler—and the symphony became a work about freedom, new beginnings, and moral resolve.
Stegreif takes this spirit seriously and radically reimagines the “Eroica.” The improvising symphony orchestra plays without sheet music, without a conductor, and without a fixed seating arrangement. The musicians move through the space, respond to one another, and blend Beethoven’s music with improvisation, recomposition, and new sonic perspectives.
The result is not a disrespectful break with the original, but a vibrant engagement with its revolutionary power. On German Unity Day, the “Eroica” becomes an invitation to reexamine even the familiar—courageously, freely, and directly.
