"Steina: Playback" at Haus der Kunst is the first retrospective in Germany of Steina, a pioneer of video and media art. As a classically trained violinist, she turned to the medium of video at the end of the 1960s and approached it with musical sensitivity. In her practice, she creates images through sound and vice versa. Video becomes vibration, a current that transforms individual elements into tangible environments. Steina introduces rhythm and resonance into her electronic experiments and treats the signal as a medium that transforms perception into something changeable and alive.
