A theatrical and musical reading

In 1965, an Arab Jew, using a false identity, pulls off a spy coup in the highest echelons of the Syrian government. In 1895, a young woman disguises herself as a man to study at a Talmud school. In 1945, Berlin’s most famous clown survives a concentration camp only by amusing the camp commander by barking like a dog and doing the “sit” command. And in 2010, a young Israeli pretends to be his own brother because he can’t say “no” over the phone.
Director, writer, and actor Stéphane Bittoun reads, performs, and lives out these and many other stories—some of them true—weaving them into an evening exploring the often dangerous, sometimes delightful
play with identity.
Jews Undercover, under the radar, in disguise. A uniquely Jewish phenomenon? Whether out of conformity, on a secret mission, or to escape persecution: going undercover is a principle of survival.
Accompanied musically by Peter Bongard on piano, Bittoun blends reading, film, acting, and humor. And the clandestine double life of Tel Aviv’s stray cats is also revealed.
But despite all the tall tales, every anecdote also holds a profound truth…

Stéphane Bittoun, the son of a French Jew from Algeria, studied directing and works as a writer and director at the intersection of theater and film. He has written and directed productions at venues including the Künstler*innenhaus Mousonturm in Frankfurt, Kampnagel in Hamburg, and the state theaters in Mainz, Wiesbaden, Meiningen, and Kassel.
With his productions—which are as entertaining as they are profound—such as “The Day It Rained Carnations” and “After the Anger,” Bittoun has toured throughout Germany and presented two of his productions at the Cameri Theater in Tel Aviv. For his film-and-theater evenings, he was nominated for the George Tabori Prize, among other honors. He has also made a name for himself as a voice-over artist for TV (from ARTE documentaries to “Galileo” on Prosieben to “Kulturzeit” on 3Sat), as well as for dubbing and his own original staged readings.
Peter Bongard, a jazz pianist and photographer, lives in the Westerwald and performs as a pianist, keyboardist, and bassist in many bands and projects—including Jadeherz, Übermut, Katharina Stahl, and Jezzt. Peter Bongard loves jazz, but also feels at home in funk, soul, gospel, and classical music: during his improvisations, he effortlessly blurs stylistic boundaries time and again. Following a dramatic-musical reading about Herbie Hancock, “Jews Undercover” marks his second collaboration with Stéphane Bittoun.
