She and he. Catherine and Jules. A couple who have grown old together. They’ve spent their entire lives together. After they got married, the war came; a ménage-à-trois with Jim was followed by life as a couple. Love, trust, routine. Tea and potted plants in a rented apartment—with a view blocked from the window.
What if? How would life have turned out if they’d made different choices back then? Is there a duty to determine one’s own fate?
The trio of actors is outstanding. Fiona Metscher, who is actually much too young for the role of Catherine, embodies all the more convincingly the childlike naivety brought on by her illness. She masters the shifts between delusion and lucidity so brilliantly that even the audience soon finds it hard to tell them apart. (Die Rheinpfalz)
In “Stück vom Himmel,” Carsten Brandau continues Truffaut’s story of the love triangle between Catherine, Jules, and Jim—and expands it to include the existential questions that arise when old age begins to change people.
The production leaves the audience at the nearly sold-out Theaterhaus G7 pensive and offers a bleak glimpse into the future of our aging society. Bleak as a veil. For Mr. Nebel is coming through the doors. (Mannheimer Morgen)
