The public debate surrounding the Middle East conflict has massively changed communicative behavior in many social milieus. In many places, analytical observations and differentiated descriptions have been replaced by polemical simplifications and personal hostility. The specific dynamics of the conflict are forcing the formation of camps that are seemingly irreconcilably opposed to each other - even far removed from the events of the war. It is becoming increasingly difficult to position oneself independently and with integrity, or even to mediate between the parties to the conflict. How are these complex social and communicative processes to be understood? Why do even those who otherwise claim critical thinking, artistic freedom and social commitment succumb to them?
In our second discussion on the effects of October 7 on art and culture, we will focus on such dynamics of communicative action - and not least on the question of which paths could lead out of the blocking confrontations and escalating situations.
OMER BARTOV is Professor of European History and German Studies at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, USA. He is considered an authoritative expert on genocide studies and is the author of numerous books on the subject.
CAROLIN EMCKE is a publicist whose books, essays, columns and artistic interventions deal with the topics of violence, trauma, anti-democracy and racism. She has curated and moderated the "Streitraum" at the Schaubühne Berlin for 20 years and the podcast "In aller Ruhe" since 2023.
HITO STEYERL is an artist, filmmaker and author. She withdrew her work from documenta fifteen in 2022 due to the inadequate clarification of the anti-Semitism incidents.
NICOLE DEITELHOFF is Director of the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt - Leibniz Institute for Peace and Conflict Research in Frankfurt am Main. In 2022, she headed the commission of experts that investigated the accusations of anti-Semitism against documenta fifteen.
MERON MENDEL, born in Ramat Gan in 1976, is Professor of Social Work at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences and Director of the Anne Frank Educational Center. His most recent publication is "Über Israel reden. A German Debate" (KiWi 2023).
NANECI YURDAGÜL from Frankfurt am Main is a sculptor and performance artist. He lives and works in Frankfurt am Main and Bombay. In 2011, Yurdagül was invited to show his work UNTITLED - MADE IN ISRAEL in the Israeli Contemporary Collection of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, the first German artist in the history of the State of Israel to do so. His performance LORELEY premiered at the Bundeskunsthalle on October 3, 2023.
