Release party! The Hamburg independent label BB*ISLAND is celebrating three freshly released albums that the world really needs.
THE BURNING HELL (Ghost Palace)
The Canadian garage-folk/indie-rock-odd balls are no strangers to Hamburg and are always good for surprises. They were already playing party anthems about the apocalypse when the apocalypse hadn't even arrived at the party yet. Somehow that has now changed. The Burning Hell, consisting of Mathias Kom and Ariel Sharratt at the core, with changing friends and guests, are known for their wildly genre-bending songs. Even with their thematic fixation on the approaching end, and human bankruptcy great and small, they ultimately celebrate sharing in a world created together, always surprising and occasionally even beautiful. This time, instruments are swapped between Mathias Kom, Ariel Sharratt, Shotgun Jimmie and Maria Peddle. Everyone can sing along... "Pass The Wine, Fuck The Government, I Love You..."
THE SOUND OF MONEY (Two: Rhyme On)
This will be the Munich band's Hamburg debut, but they are not completely unknown. And like their labelmates from Canada, they think their delicious underground pop around three corners with a well-defined concept, briefly outlined here.
2017: Just in time for the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love 1967, The Sound of Money presented their concept record "More? WHY NOT! - AN ANAGRAMMATIC EXORCISM OF THE 60S" (BB*Island). To do this, they turned the titles of 12 of their favorite records from this pop-era decade into anagrams - and poof, they had 12 titles for completely new songs: "Pet Sounds" became "Nude Spots", "Piper At the Gates of Dawn" became "Tiger T - Death Happens to a Few" ...
2025: Just in time for the 50th anniversary of punk, they are back on the scene: "TWO: RHYME ON - AN ANAGRAMMATIC EXORCISM OF THE 70s" (BB*Island) will be released on May 23rd - with anagrams from David Bowie to Chic, from Nico to Slits, from Bob Marley to Kraftwerk. An example? "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" becomes "Dr. Dr. Themefart, Frustrating Himself, Posed as Gay Old Nazi SS". And just like the letters of the title, the music and lyrics have been shaken up into a dazzling, grotesque kaleidoscope of classic 70s pop styles: Agricultural p-funk, financial casino gospel disco, anti-pogo post-punk, doubting home computer dub jazz, the whole of Bowie in three and a half minutes backwards ...
Live a wild mouse ride of pop glam with a Munich underground all-star line-up
SWEARING AT MOTORISTS (While Laughing, The Joker Tells The Truth)
Definitely not a Hamburg debut, but a label debut. The lo-fi rock duo (originally from Dayton, OH, now St. Pauli, HH) restarts their engine after a few pit stops and it's already purring along nicely. Singer/guitarist Dave Doughman has completed a new album with drummer Martin Boeters, which will be released later this year on BB*ISLAND. Their great album "While Laughing, The Joker Tells The Truth", produced by Rick McPhail, will be re-released in May, which seemed to us to have gone a little under the radar in 2014. Critics once described Swearing At Motorists as "The Two Man Who", and anyone who has been lucky enough to see them live would certainly agree. Energetic, charismatic, crashing chords, a distinctive soulful voice and a bit of the requisite madness...
