The Dorf & Umland Festival

The Dorf und Umland Festival can now look back on a full decade of tradition. Based on the legendary "Dorf-Orgien", the idea was born to present the numerous activities and ensembles that had formed around the flagship "The Dorf" in an appropriate form as part of the "Jazzpreis Ruhr". Initially outside the Domicil, on and above Hansastrasse, but soon in a more official form as an evening and space-filling festival lasting several days. Every year, this festival was held in Dortmund as well as in all the different cities in NRW that make up the village population: Münster, Cologne, Hagen, Bochum, Essen, Bonn, and many more. A program full of experiments, established bands, start-ups and the occasional star. Last but not least, it is probably thanks to the festival that concert series such as the Umland Expo and the Umland Label have become firmly anchored in NRW's cultural landscape.

In 2024, we would like to take the festival back to its roots, so to speak, and spend the two afternoons together with the audience at different locations in the Hansaviertel. At 4 p.m. sharp, the villagers will head out from Domicil to several venues and perform there for the next three hours: A museum, a vacancy, a record store, a laundromat and the paths in between. The audience is invited to move around freely and find their own individual routes between the concerts. At 6.40 pm we will meet at Domicil for a little surprise, where we will listen to "The Dorf" at 8 pm.

Black Plastic in Dortmund is one of the biggest record stores in Germany. During the Umland Festival, it will not only be playing music on vinyl, but also live and acoustically. The Dorf is not only a huge band, but also a pool of musicians who play together in various projects. In Black Plastic you can hear some of these bands and also formations put together especially for this purpose.

The Labor

Audio-visual experiment with improvising villagers

The Labor is a performance conceived as a laboratory experiment.
Constantly changing trios improvise. Projections serve as a source of impulses and can be influenced by the experimenter (the audience). A scientific experiment to reveal the causality between impulse, energy and communication.

"The Labor" is an attempt to encounter improvised music in a new setting, to set boundaries for oneself and then to transcend them. Three projections provide impulses, moods and instructions for three musicians. This concept of encountering improvised music with visual stimuli is not new, but with The Labor the audience has the opportunity to change or switch the projections and thus become an active part of the experiment. The causal relationship between the protagonists, sound colors and impulses is made directly tangible here and will ensure an exciting event with an uncertain course.

A mobile orchestra goes around and fulfills the musical wishes of the audience. Composers or bands are requested. Specific titles must be sung to the players. These are fulfilled immediately so that, for example, Mozart can be heard alongside the Stones or Charlie Parker. Thanks to the genius of the musicians, the potential chaos should
should quickly become a melodious quodlibet. Once this is achieved, it is briefly enjoyed and then moved on to the next challenge.

As part of the annual Umland Festival, "The Dorf" will make a guest appearance on October 17 and 18, 2024 at the Museum of Art and Art History of the
City of Dortmund (MKK). On these two days, various identities of the KlangKollektiv will present themselves both as soloists and interactively. Musicians inside,
musicians, sound researchers and sound designers, who have each developed their very own acoustic concepts and individual sound languages, will transform the museum venue into a sound stage from 4.00 pm to 6.40 pm. Installative, experimental improvisations invite you to pause and listen. Improvisation as an expression of the unpredictable, in which the moment counts, the intuitive feeling for what is happening in the room. Sound arises from the perception of the moment, not from the implementation of a predetermined plan, a fixed composition. Music in the present.
In the former premises of the museum café, seating and reclining areas have been installed so that visitors can linger and experience the flowing sound interventions while walking, lying down or sitting.

Soup reception in the Domicil

At The Dorf und Umland Festival, the band also invites the audience to eat soup together before the "The Dorf" concert starts in the Domicil hall in the evening as the highlight of the festival day.

After presenting the village cosmos, the village environs, in the afternoon, the concentrated energy that arises when the 25 musicians are on stage together should of course not be missing in the evening: Musically boundary-breaking, space-filling, powerful, imaginative, even irritating, but always surprising.
Utopian beats! Off to the village! The 25-piece innovative large-scale formation The Dorf is one of the creative trouble spots at domicil. Formed in one of the curatorial series that began in 2006, the ensemble is led by saxophonist and composer Jan Klare and meets once a month for a public workshop concert in the domicil's main hall.
There are regular "away games", international festival invitations and specials with exciting new projects (unforgettable, for example: The Dorf plays Ummagumma as part of the Pink Floyd exhibition). The creative and socio-cultural work of the ensemble was documented in the feature film "Jazzsoup", which was shown in numerous cinemas in NRW in 2013 after its sold-out premiere at domicil.
