Summer 1918: The Mann family has rented a house on Lake Tegernsee. The children swim, the father rows, the mother looks after the new baby and the dog dozes in the shade. An idyll. But Thomas Mann is plagued by worries: defeat in the First World War is imminent, he has fallen out with his brother Heinrich, he lacks the strength to work on "The Magic Mountain" and then a tooth falls out. Kerstin Holzer ("Monascella" and others) tells the story of a Bavarian summer retreat that was to become a turning point in the life of the Nobel Prize winner for literature (Kiepenheuer & Witsch). A reconsideration within Thomas Mann research and at the same time an enchanting summer read.
