Töurcher en Kölle un drömeröm: St. Peter und St. Georg - Versteckte Juwelen in Köln
In the organizer's words:
St. Peter and St. George—Hidden Gems in Cologne
Under the motto “Two in One,” this guided tour introduces you to the churches of St. Peter and St. George in downtown Cologne.
Together with the neighboring former Romanesque collegiate church of St. Cecilia, St. Peter’s is the last surviving example of the “double church system” that was once typical in Cologne. The church, now known as Kunststation St. Peter, regularly hosts contemporary exhibitions. It is also home to, among other things, Peter Paul Rubens’ famous depiction of the Crucifixion of St. Peter.
The Romanesque Church of St. George appears rather simple from the outside, but its interior reveals many interesting details. The evolution of artistic depictions is clearly evident here in the crucifixes from various eras. “Our Lord on the Cross” is therefore a central theme of the tour. The stained-glass windows in the last surviving columned basilica in the Rhineland were created by Jan Thorn Prikker, the pioneer of modern glass art. But to keep things from getting too dry, “we’ll chat the whole time in Kölsch.”
As we weave certain themes into Cologne’s city history and pair them with traditional Cologne songs, you’re invited to actively participate.
