Is emotional music in German possible without cringe? Yes! at least says the indie rock band umbra. Founded in 2020, the three elective Cologners are looking for their little place in the midst of the German-language genre diversity. They feel comfortable somewhere between fat guitar walls, intimate melodies and warm, analog, but still fresh sound. This is how they create songs with lyrics in German, which - sometimes rapped, sometimes sung - deal with the everyday madness of our time and never become trivial between big questions and personal moments. The three (who, by the way, are extremely uncomfortable writing about themselves in the third person in band bios like this one) are most pleased when they are allowed to kidnap their audience for a short time at concerts. Or when a dear person tells them that one of their songs has become the soundtrack to a phase of their lives.

Flora Chroma throw down a danceable, guitar-heavy indie disco that Placebo and Parcels would party to, weaving elements from a wide variety of styles into their own signature. In their lyrics, they draw everyday situations, but when viewed from a distance, they ask big questions. Their musical language is complex enough to surprise again and again, and at the same time catchy enough not to lose the essence of the song. The four flagship hipsters from Cologne have risen as Phoenix from the ashes of old music projects and are now ready to learn how to fly.

Kolya und die Semikolonne make handmade, approachable acoustic pop with world-weariness and a twinkle in their eyes.

They sing and play of rain hovering over the horizon and smelling of adventure. Of affection, like a gust of wind on the bare neck, and of massive clouds that never go away. They sing of trees seeking hold in each other and of doubting tones and disillusionment. And they sing of the smirking winks that are everywhere if you just look closely.
