Many of the poems set to music come from the personal estate of Edmund Nick.

They were entrusted to Susanne Brantl by his daughter, the poet Dagmar Nick, who was herself a contemporary witness and had known Kästner since her childhood. Her trust is what made this program possible in the first place. Some of the chansons exist only as handwritten sheet music—so-called autographs: a piece of music history comes to life. This opens not only musical but also biographical doors: to Kästner’s subtle wit, to Nick’s art of composition, and to an intimate glimpse into a lifelong friendship.
