In the organizer's words:
When we talk about Nippes in Cologne, we know that we are talking about a very popular district. The former industrial site originated in a rural settlement, the Mauenheimer Höfe, and was incorporated in 1888. At that time, the Clouthwerke were already busy processing rubber, sewing diving suits for the navy and producing assembly lines and insulation material for telephone cables. Railroads were also repaired here, and flour was ground in the Auermühle mill.
Cologne was under Prussian rule in the age of industrialization. Within 100 years between 1814 and 1914, the population had increased tenfold and had to live somewhere. In Nippes, streets with beautiful squares, workers' housing and stately Wilhelminian-style houses were built along an old arm of the Rhine, the remains of which form the Nippeser Tälchen.
Elsewhere, Nippes is understood to mean kitsch or ornamentation. This gentrified district is a far cry from that. Here, between Nippeser Schweiz, Nippeser Alhambra and Altenberger Hof, the quality of life is just right.
