Urlaub in Köln | Von der Märchensiedlung zur Naumannsiedlung I Radtour

We cycle from Dellbrück to Riehl. Through the Märchensiedlung, along the Strunde, through the Mülheim city garden over the Mülheim bridge to Riehl in the Naumannsiedlung.

The Märchensiedlung is located between Drosselbartstraße and Dornröschenhecke. The GAG drew up a development plan for the "Iddelsfeld estate" in 1920. This commission was given to the Jewish architect Manfred Faber. Today's fairytale estate consists of 180 detached houses with large gardens. The estate was modeled on the British idea of the "garden city estate" for the working class with the possibility of keeping small animals and self-sufficiency.

Manfred Faber later designed other renowned buildings, including the Naumannsiedlung in Cologne-Riehl. At the time, 450 affordable apartments with simple furnishings and no bathrooms were built for low-income tenants with many children. The municipal housing office mainly allocated the apartments to workers fromFord, Rheinkabel and the land and sea cable factory belonging toClouth. Today, 611 freshly renovated apartments shine brightly. Faber's signature style comes into its own with the expressionist details.
