Workshop: Too Much - Überwältigung als künstlerische Strategie

We cordially invite you to the second workshop of SimultanProjekte 2026: Too Much – Overwhelm as an Artistic Strategy. This workshop focuses on the cultural technique of “Too Much” as an artistic tool, using improvisational exercises to create your own mini-performance. Together, we’ll explore how aesthetic maximalism can become a subversive practice in times of shrinking budgets—a strategy that has always played a central role in queer performance art. Inspired by Susan Sontag’s reflections on camp as an aesthetic of exaggeration, we will examine how overwhelming the senses functions as a conscious artistic decision: namely as a means to break norms, open up new layers of meaning, and generate a wealth of possibilities from limited resources. 

During the workshop, we will engage with what we encounter on the outdoor railing of the Simultanhalle. Starting from these seemingly limited resources, we’ll explore how overwhelming effect can be understood not only as a stylistic device but also as a political gesture: as resistance to the aesthetics of austerity and as an affirmation of excess in a time of scarcity. 

All participants will develop their own character based on the principles of “Too Much.” Through improvisational exercises and the creation of a score as stage directions for a mini-performance, we will explore how artistic statements emerge from intuition, exaggeration, and aesthetic radicalism. Stop overthinking. The focus here is not on the perfect result, but on the process of experimentation and the willingness to embrace “too much.” At the end of the workshop, everyone will take home a sketch, a score, or a character for a performance—proof that sometimes “too much” is exactly the right amount.
