It was one of the great moments at Musikfest Bremen 2019: Nicole Chevalier stepped in for Patricia Petibon, who was ill - and celebrated true triumphs as Violetta Valéry in Giuseppe Verdi's "La traviata". With her coloratura-flashing soprano full of vocal high tension, her stylistically flawless diction and her acting furor, Nicole Chevalier simply outshone everything. Once again, the exceptional American artist underlined that singing is not just vocal artistry for her, but an expression of extreme emotions. This makes her ideal for the female characters in Verdi's operas, whose emotional conflicts and fates in a mostly hostile male world the composer also shows as a mirror of social norms and constraints. The Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra and its GMD Marko Letonja impressed at the Musikfest in the two previous years with Giacomo Puccini, Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. When they now immerse themselves in Verdi's enchanting sound cosmos, they guarantee that Nicole Chevalier will be able to breathe dramatic intensity and moving depth of feeling into her characters!
