In medieval Cologne, the town hall and the Jewish quarter had been closely intertwined since the 12th century. The expansion of the town hall, necessitated by the growing importance of the city council and the increase in administrative and representative tasks, very quickly reached its limits in the existing spatial situation. It only seemed possible at the expense of the Jewish community.

The lecture sheds light on the urban redevelopment of the Jewish quarter in the wake of the pogrom of 1349 and the expulsion of the Jewish community in 1424.

The lecture is the first in a series of events on Cologne's Ratskapelle, which will be consecrated for the 600th time on September 8, 2026.
