A memorial pavilion, which was created as an art and youth project against discrimination and right-wing violence, stands at the junction of Fehrfeld Street and Humboldt Street in the Bremen district. It commemorates twelve victims of right-wing extremist violence since German reunification who were murdered because of their religion, skin color, sexual orientation, disability or because they were homeless. They are representative of all victims of right-wing violence in Germany. The square on which the memorial pavilion stands was named Marwa-El-Sherbini-Platz in 2018. She is one of the twelve victims of violence whose story and fate is commemorated at the memorial pavilion. She lived with her family in Bremen from 2005 to 2008. Since 2012, formats have been repeatedly designed with young people in which artistic approaches to historical and political topics are used and educational work critical of anti-Semitism and racism is part of the discussions in this work. Since 2019, the Yortsayt memorial event has been held annually on July 1 at Marwa El-Sherbini Square. Marwa El-Sherbini was murdered on July 1, 2009 in the Dresden district court by a right-wing perpetrator of violence. Since then, July 1 has been a day against anti-Muslim racism.
The lecture explains how an art and youth project became a memorial pavilion against right-wing violence in everyday life. It presents events and formats that have taken place since the memorial site was established and what activities are planned for the future. Especially in times when the extreme right is back in parliament and social media is being used as a propaganda platform by right-wing extremists and Islamists, new concepts are needed that appeal to and reach young people.
The subsequent discussion invites us to talk about the necessity of such art and cultural projects, as well as possible networks, necessary resources and implementation options in Bremen.
Elianna Renner is an artist living in Bremen and Tel Aviv who works at the intersection of biography and history. She is particularly interested in the stories of women, the marginalized, outsiders, the persecuted and those who are forgotten. Elianna Renner has been working for years on projects in an international context, e.g. in New York, Buenos Aires, Tel Aviv and Frankfurt. Her works have been shown in numerous exhibitions in Germany and abroad. Renner is the winner of the Ottersberg Art Prize (2019), the Theobald Simon Prize (2012) and the 33rd Promotion Prize for Fine Arts 2009 of the City of Bremen. In addition to her artistic work, she is the initiator of the Köfte Kosher memorial pavilion on Marwa-el-Sherbini Platz, which stands against right-wing violence, racism and anti-Semitism in Bremen. She is constantly developing new methods to combine art, activism and educational formats.
