Viola, shipwrecked, washes ashore on the coast of Illyria and disguises herself as a man for protection. As Cesario, she enters the service of Duke Orsino and delivers his declarations of love to Countess Olivia. The Countess, however, immediately falls in love with Viola*Cesario, whose*heart, however, belongs to Orsino. And when Viola’s
twin brother Sebastian—who was believed to be lost—shows up, the (romantic) confusion is complete.

Who am I, and if so, why? In *As You Like It*, nothing is as it seems, and no one is who they claim to be. Shakespeare’s comedy of mistaken identity artfully and playfully subverts gender norms and raises questions about (gender) identity, sexuality, and the meaning of life.
