Since its construction in 1842, through the postwar period and up to the present day, the former main church has been the subject of extensive debates regarding its demolition, renovation, or reconstruction. As part of theHamburg Architecture Summer, several events at the memorial will address this complex of issues. On July 10, there will be a guided tour at 4:30 p.m. and a panel discussion at 6:30 p.m., both focusing on planning approaches to the current St. Nikolai Memorial. Participants in the discussion will include Franz-Josef Höing, Chief Architect of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Nina Kemp (MIMA Architektur), and Dr. Nele Fahnenbruck, Executive Director of the St. Nikolai Memorial, will discuss the architectural competitions of past decades as well as the current redesign of the memorial as part of the “National Urban Development Projects 2024” funding program. The discussion will be moderated by architectural historian Prof. Olaf Bartels.
Afterward, there will be a reception with refreshments at theBauhütte St. Nikolai. The events are free of charge. Registration is requested: Register for the guided tour| Register for the panel discussion.
