In the organizer's words:
"Wuthering Heights" tells the story of the passionate, destructive relationship between the outsider Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, whose unrequited love sparks jealousy, revenge and family conflicts over the years.
Emerald Fennell cannot be accused of not trying to set herself apart from other approaches to classic film adaptations with her literary adaptation. Motifs from her previous films can clearly be found in her perspective on the Emily Brontë novel. Sexual transgression, the depravity of the upper class and male-dominated violence once again play a central role in this film. In many places, the film's set design and costumes drift into an artificiality on display, which is also reflected on a sound level in the recurring songs by hyperpop artist Charli XCX. Fennell's interpretation of the novel, influenced by her reading experience as a teenager, focuses almost entirely on the destructive desire between Catherine and Heathcliffe and is certainly also a reaction to the dark romance hype. This is not the only reason why "Wuthering Heights" is already causing heated debates among cinephiles and currently seems to be the movie of the hour.
Disclaimer: Although the film has been criticized for whitewashing, among other things, we as a film club want to initiate a critical examination of representation in cinema with this screening.
