YELKA ‧ DISSO!VER ‧ MATHIAS SCHAFFHÄUSER

Yelka

PostkrautJazz

Yelka are:

Yelka Wehmeier: namesake, bass and vocals (previously with Gewalt and Eagle Boston).

Daniel Meteo: guitar (from The Whitest Boy Alive, among others) known as manager of Apparat and co-founder of Shitkatapult).

Christian Obermaier: drums (played with Schneider TM and Eagle Boston, among others).

When I heard YELKA for the first time, I thought: "I'd like to play in that band too." I now know that it wouldn't be that easy. What comes across as super easy and fluffy is so special and unique that if you weren't part of the band, you wouldn't be able to hit the note so easily. This is mainly due to the unconventional harmonies of the guitars. Daniel himself says that he is very happy with the guitars and that he played a second guitar on almost all the songs this time, which I, as a fan of his anarchic playing style, think is great. Once again, the album is held together by Yelka's stoically grooving, absolutely chic-sounding bass, which meanders through the wild guitar garlands as if it were the most natural thing in the world. And when Yelka sings, the tracks suddenly become totally pop, just like the Velvet Underground. Christian's drums mediate between these two poles. Pleasantly playful, slightly jazzy and mostly herbaceous, he plays his way through the tracks. Everything is recorded live and sounds great.

Special highlights on this 6th YELKA album, "JEANS", are the piano interventions by Federico Corazzini, who adds wonderful open jazz chords to the band's special harmonies, and the choral arrangements by pop protection icon Arne Bergner, who is also responsible for the production. Once again, Norman Nitzsche's mastering at Mokik Studio puts the finishing touches to YELKA's wonderful sound. A great band album, from the great pop draft "King of the World" - Steely Dan cover - with a fantastic keyboard solo by "the one and only Dan Ra", alias Daniel Nentwig, from The Whitest Boy Alive, among others, to the atmospheric-jazzy miniature "Moon For Now" to the eccentric, almost 9-minute guitar ejector "Walking Whispering" - I think there are definitely more than two guitars in there - everything is included. American indie rock/pop/jazz-whatever school - after all, this is the third album in the band's America trilogy - and yet above all Berlin, in its most likeable and perhaps even coolest form.

Disso!ver

Indie Neokraut

Disso!ver live is like a kind of one-man Neokraut indie jukebox: guitar, bass, analog synthesizer and other instruments are played, looped, with lines like:

"Post Post Something.

Neo-Something.

Once upon a time for someone

something was once somehow

of importance"

The songs vary between synth-pop, neo-kraut and fuzzy indie rock. The current record "Die völlige Abwesenheit von Punk" was promptly named "Record of the Month" in the Cologne "Stadtrevue".

Mathias Schaffhäuser

Indie-Dance & Electronica

With "Singing About It", his last solo album, Mathias Schaffhäuser surprised fans and colleagues in fall '24 - suddenly the focus was on vocals and songs and no longer on the dancefloor. So a new stage concept was needed: live vocals to pre-produced backing tracks plus live-generated visuals by video artist Stephan Meyer. And this concept celebrated its premiere at the Blue Shell on October 11, 2024! After that, the names Bowie, Ferry and Scott Walker started doing the rounds in the audience - not a bad start.

A lot has happened since then, Mathias has played a number of gigs, including at the MTC, Odonien and the Asimmetric Bar, and in October '25 "Beneath Your Feet", the third album of his project FANATICO X (together with New Yorker Jorge Socarrás), was released. Groove magazine wrote: "Poetic, fantastic and yes, danceable too. Beneath Your Feet (...) feels as if someone is readjusting a familiar electronic coordinate system."

2026 also marks the 25th anniversary of the release of Schaffhäuser's album "Love & Business", which will be celebrated with reworkings of the two successful songs "Hey Little Girl" and "Take Me To Your Heart" - enough material for a live update!

The tried and tested concept has not been shaken, everything that can be heard has been produced, recorded and sung by the Cologne native himself - without any tricks or AI. The songs groove between downbeat, minimal and house and move stylistically in the wide field of art and indie pop. Or, as Angie Portmann said so beautifully in her show "Late Nite Sounds" on Bayern 2: "Call it Cosmic Art Pop?" The answer is best left up to you.

Feedback + reviews for "Singing About It":

Thomas Meinecke (F.S.K., author):

I'm impressed by the production and the determined crooning!

Hans Nieswandt (Whirlpool Prod.):

I also like it very much.

Patrick Wagner (Gewalt_Band):

I think it's great. I like the ghostly Bowie-like "I Fall With You" the best

Michael Reinboth (Compost Records):

I think it's good.

... and the album BENEATH YOUR FEET by FANATICO X:

Kaput Mag:

- Album of the week! -

Crossing borders and pushing boundaries is exciting, especially when it's done by such accomplished protagonists of the scene as Cologne-based DJ and producer Mathias Schaffhäuser and singer Jorge Socarrás.

MINT:

Its diversity is what defines Beneath Your Feet. With each track, the duo transports you into a different mood - gently but firmly. (...)
