Uncut 'The Age Of Aquarius has a patchwork aesthetic that brings together loose strands of music from around the world and puts them at the service of the dancefloor'.
YĪN YĪN's new long player The Age Of Aquarius is a simple, direct appeal to dance. It's also a record blessed with a considerable hinterland; cosmic time, long studio hours and a determination to transcend the daily ennui of life in the Dutch city of Maastricht all play a part.
The beautiful, old and somewhat staid city of Maastricht, where the band is based, is not exactly conducive to building a vibrant music scene: a place where outsiders quickly recognize themselves. YĪN YĪN are all "night people", which means that their friendship was initially formed through organizing and hosting DIY parties together. Before the band was formed, none of them had pursued a conventional career or done the "very Dutch thing" of graduating from university.
Things only really got moving when founders Yves Lennertz and Kees Berkers decided to record a cassette with references to South and Southeast Asian music. Once the idea had been finalized, they wasted no time and brought "a lot" of instruments to a rented rehearsal room in a small village near Maastricht. There they set up a couple of microphones and recorded a number of songs within three days.
We asked our musical friends to help us, and from that evening on we were a full band: with Remy Scheren on bass, Robbert Verwijlen on keys and occasionally Jerome Cardynaals on drums.
In early 2022, YĪN underwent a major line-up change when co-founder Lennertz left the band and was replaced by guitarist Erik Bandt. With renewed energy, the band conquered stages across the continent.
