In her novel 'Pizza Orlando', Clara Umbach tells a love story under difficult circumstances. Nina and Clara write messages to each other from different places, which, together with Clara's narrative inserts, condense into the novel we are reading. With 'Years without Language', Ann Esswein has written a touching novel about love, closeness and abuse. Natascha comes from a small town where not much goes on. Luki is her childhood friend, his mother is her mother substitute. But then there is this young footballer who she only calls "the hand". The hand she can't defend herself against. Natascha disappears - and then reappears.
