Zwoisy Mears-Clarke: Erste Schritte zu den Schwellen

In the organizer's words:

About the event:

External venue: at the Werdersee, exact address tba
With integrated audio description

How can we leave the colonial spaces we have been accustomed to for over 500 years? How can we cross the thresholds that lead to other worlds? We must first approach these thresholds, step by step.
"First Steps to the Thresholds" creates a new folk dance and brings it into the public space: the performance is inspired by German mask traditions. However, it is not winter that is to be driven away here, but local colonial power structures. In a slow procession, masked figures dance rhythmically with bells between their shoulder blades while describing their movements as a creative, integrated audio description and telling stories in German, Spanish and English. Each character is a seducer and a transformer - and is looking forward to dancing with you!

Audience and performers move in a space between colonial and decolonial perspectives. Who knows what will happen after the joint procession, a few steps closer to the thresholds - while lingering and sharing a cup of tea?

About the artists:

Zwoisy Mears-Clarke sees herself as a choreographer of encounters. Zwoisy uses the potential of dance and storytelling to make forms of oppression such as neo-colonialism, sexism and ableism visible and to enable encounters that would otherwise be impossible. By alternating between spoken languages and movement languages, Zwoisy's choreographies offer the opportunity to encounter oneself and other people in a new way. Most recently, Zwoisy Mears-Clarke was a guest at the Schwankhalle with the dance performance "Geneigter".

Accessibility:

The performance is aimed at blind, visually impaired and sighted audiences. There is a creative, integrated audio description in German.

German, English and Spanish spoken language will also be used.

The performance takes place outdoors and the audience is invited to follow the performers on their procession. The venue is at ground level and accessible for people with limited mobility.
