In the middle of the 6th district, directly on the Linke Wienzeile, stands one of the most exciting opera houses in Europe. The Musiktheater an der Wien has a long history: built in 1801 by Emanuel Schikaneder, the librettist of The Magic Flute, Beethoven's "Fidelio" and 13 operettas by Johann Strauss II premiered here. Today, under Artistic Director Stefan Herheim, the house is a lively venue for opera and music theater from the early Baroque to the present day, and is the only opera house in the German-speaking world with this scope of programming.

What is special here is the intimate atmosphere. Around 1,100 seats, exceptional acoustics and proximity to the stage make every evening a real experience. The house is located directly on the Naschmarkt, nestled in the lively Schleifmühlviertel district, and consciously sees itself as part of its neighborhood. Opera that opens up rather than closing itself off.

Tickets are available online, by phone or directly at the box office on site. The Box Office opens at 6 pm, the house itself one hour before the performance begins.
