The heart of the film lies between the shots. Film editing sets the pace, dictates the order of the images and the timing of the story. It is said that a good cut must remain invisible. That is a matter of opinion. But its makers and the rules of their art should not remain invisible.

Edimotion, the Cologne Festival for Film Editing and Montage Art, gives film editing a face and shows its faces.

Edimotion honors the outstanding work of editors. The editing prizes for the best editing work on a German, Austrian or Swiss feature film or cinema documentary are endowed with 7,500 euros each. In the competition for the best montage of a short film, The Edit Space Förderpreis Schnitt, which is endowed with 2,500 euros, entries from Germany, Austria and Switzerland that are no longer than 20 minutes are eligible for submission.

Edimotion honors the life's work of deserving editors. In a short film series, the tribute presents excerpts from the oeuvre of the honorary prize winner and offers the audience the opportunity to talk with the honorees about their specific working style as reflected in the decades of their work.

Edimotion fosters a dialogue between the film creatives themselves and with the audience:

The thematic focus a series of lectures and discussion panels, makes the theory of film editing vivid, reflects on its practice and builds bridges between the trades or neighboring media and art forms.

The International Film Editors Forum offers international editors the opportunity to network and exchange ideas in a world café format.

The international guest country evening honors the achievements of an editor from the international region and, in addition to an in-depth workshop discussion, also offers insights into the professional environment of editors in the corresponding country.

Edimotion is education: since 2018, a total of six workshops and an international masterclass have offered experienced editors and other filmmakers the opportunity to further their education in current topics. Dramaturgy and editing, communication and montage as well as insights into neighboring trades or innovative techniques are the main focus of the Edimotion Academy.

Edimotion is cinema. All screenings of the competition films take place for jury and audience on the screen in the presence of the editors, followed by a film discussion with the nominees.

Through a multi-layered and multifaceted program, Edimotion provides insights into the aesthetics and techniques of film editing to a public outside the industry, and thus also gives film-interested laypeople a vivid, very concrete impression of what it is all about, the "magic of the editing room".
