Until around 100 years ago, the universe seemed to be limited to our Milky Way. But then more and more galaxies were detected far beyond the Milky Way, whose light was also clearly red-shifted, suggesting a general expansion of the cosmos. This in turn led to the assumption of a "big bang" at the beginning of our time, while other discoveries point to forms of matter and energy that were previously not understood. So today we find ourselves in a world whose spatial, material and temporal horizons exceed our imagination.
