Arnold Bax's Tintagel creates a sonorous landscape of rocks, sea and myth. The music follows the movement of the coast and layers tension, expanse and romantic imagination into a wide-breathing form. Richard Strauss' Metamorphosen condenses memories. 23 solo strings form a fabric of loss, grief and transformation in which each voice is a supporting element. Max Reger's Romantic Suite op. 125 counters this with a reflective language. Romanticism does not appear as a retrospective, but as an attitude. Multi-layered, concentrated and supported by formal clarity.
