“Szene 10” presents the ultimate Christmas classic with a fresh twist: A Christmas Carol at the bakery.

The “Szene 10” theater ensemble already impresses with the impressive backgrounds of its actors and actresses, and this year they have once again set out to warm our hearts as baker’s apprentices and Christmas spirits, presenting Charles Dickens’ Christmas story once more in December 2026.

Charles Dickens’ imaginative novella tells the story of the bitter old merchant Ebenezer Scrooge, who cold-heartedly and ruthlessly torments unfortunate debtors and treats his fellow human beings with nothing but suspicion and contempt. His underpaid assistant Bob Cratchit and his family suffer particularly under the weight of Scrooge’s ice-gray soul. Even the approaching Christmas season is nothing but a nuisance and a waste of time to Scrooge. But then, on a turbulent Christmas Eve, he is visited by three ghosts who confront him with scenes from his cold-hearted life …

Thos Renneberg’s production promises whimsical ghostly apparitions, slapstick-style time travel, and turbulent role reversals. The Essen-based actor and director is a co-founder of the Commedia dell’Arte ensemble “Narratak,” the author of juggler’s manuals, and an expert in fast-paced, comedic productions. He is committed to the idea of seeking humor in the tragic and lyricism in the comic. In his latest production—much like a winter snowstorm—Renneberg has just four actors portray over 30 characters while simultaneously baking Christmas cookies live on stage.
