Woyzeck von Georg Büchner
In the organizer's words:
Woyzeck
Georg Büchner
“I believe that if we were to go to heaven, we would have to help thunder.”
A reinterpretation of Georg Büchner’s timeless fragment.
The simple soldier Franz Woyzeck lives a life of the lowest order. He is constantly surrounded by the shadows and ideals of his society. Driven by the fear of death and the constant struggle for his very existence, he is forced into menial tasks—whether shaving his captain every day or serving as the doctor’s guinea pig.
Woyzeck is driven, hounded, and abused both mentally and physically. He can no longer fulfill his responsibilities toward his girlfriend Marie and their child. Marie, in turn, succumbs to her desires and falls for the lascivious drum major. Her infidelity toward Woyzeck has consequences…
Just as Georg Büchner’s unfinished drama is merely a fragment, so this production resembles a chaotic yet carefully pieced-together puzzle: The minimalist lighting design and the audiovisual backdrop—reminiscent of a skipping record—set the stage for performative elements and create the space for a fascinating interplay of masks that literally drags the audience through the ruins of our society. At the same time, this modern production also reflects a journey through Woyzeck’s psyche, in which he threatens to lose himself over and over again.
