Who is to blame? Is it men or women who ensure that people are unfaithful to one another? An experiment is designed to provide the answer, and so a ruler has four foundlings raised in isolation from one another, cared for only by two servants. When the subjects finally meet for the first time, sparks fly, and soon things get heated in this classic comedy. But will it provide the desired answer?…

Under the direction of Thilo Matschke, the first- and second-year students of the ARTEMiS Acting Studio in Essen are staging a classic play of great contemporary relevance, in which central questions regarding gender construction, socialization, and genetic disposition are explored in a voyeuristic setting. Pierre Carlet de Marivaux (1688–1763) is one of the most fascinating French authors of the 18th century. Underappreciated by his contemporaries, he is today the most frequently performed comedy writer in France alongside Molière. In all his writings, Marivaux—who described himself as an “observer of human nature”—was primarily concerned with uncovering and bringing to light the psychological processes taking place within and between people.
