A modern myth: The story of the white whale Moby Dick and his hunter, driven by an indelible hatred. What begins as an ordinary whaling expedition turns into a life-and-death struggle under the command of the obsessed Captain Ahab. On one side stands the vengeful, scarred, one-legged man; on the other, the ghostly whale—the personification of the silent force of nature in the deadly sea. MOBY DICK offers a portrait—still relevant today—of the state of a civilization that, in its reliance on human ingenuity and unyielding willpower, constantly runs the risk of falling victim to its own hubris. Even during his lifetime, Herman Melville was a forgotten author. It was not until the 1920s that *Moby-Dick* began to gain worldwide recognition. A few decades later, it seemed as though the motif of the one-legged captain, doggedly hunting a terrifying monster across the world’s oceans only to be dragged into the depths in the end, had always existed.
