Donna Q de la Mancha, an impoverished member of the landed gentry, strives to live up to the ideal of a knight-errant and, accompanied by her neighbor Sancha Panso, loses herself in countless adventures. In the process, she repeatedly succumbs to her delusion, which leads her to believe in the honor of knighthood and her own invincibility.

The odd couple gains a bizarre kind of fame, as most of their battles end in hilariously comical defeats. In the end, Donna Q is defeated in a grand tournament and renounces her passion.

Miguel Cervantes’ *Don Quixote* is an imaginative and brilliant exploration of morality, freedom, and self-chosen roles. A wild, amusing, yet also unsettling ride through a past that is closer to us than we realize. Through powerful language, striking imagery, and playful humor, the production poses pressing questions: What does free will do to a person when it escalates into delusion? How does the individual relate to socially prescribed role models?

Our opinion-driven information society makes it increasingly difficult to distinguish truths from fake news, opinions from insights—and to appropriately reconcile socially inherited roles with individual behavior.

Teenagers and young adults, in particular, often face difficult decisions in a complex, overregulated world. With our production of *Donna Q*, we address the problem of how difficult it is to find one’s own place within the structures of the world, and how individual freedom and moral responsibility are intertwined—a challenge that is more relevant today than ever.
